Geography of MahasamundMahasamund is one of the culturally and topographically rich districts in the state of Chattisgarh located in eastern India. Raipur District - Baloda Bazar District - Gariyaband District - Raigarh District of Chattisgarh state and Nuapada District, Bargarh District and Nuapada District of Odisha state bound this district headquarter. Trans- Mahanadi Area’s largest city, it is sub-divided into 30 wards.
Situated between 82°00' and 83°15'45" longitude and 20°47' to 21°31'30" latitude, it covers a huge area of 3902.39 km². The average elevation of Mahasamund district is 1043 feet (318 meters). The district celebrated its 16th anniversary on 6 July, 2014. Mahasamund contributes greatly to the economy as it lies on the Raipur-Vizag route.
Population of MahasamundAccording to the census of 2011, the population of Mahasamund was 8, 60,176. The female population being 4, 34,165 and the male population was estimated to be 4, 26,011. Mahasamund district has maintained a healthy sex ratio of 1019 women for every 1000 men. The city is overcrowded with a high density of population, i.e. 220 people per kilometer square area.
The tribal population is quite significant as it contributes majorly to the overall population of Mahasamund. The average literacy rate is quite high at 70%, thus it is better off in terms of literacy as compared to other states. Female literacy is 61% and male literacy is 79%. A major portion of population is below 6 years.

ConnectivityMahasamund is well-connected with Chattisgarh and rest of the states with the presence of a huge number of all-weather roads and national highways such as NH-6, NH-216 and NH- 217. A four-lane road from Arang in Mahasamund to Saraipali in Odisha is being constructed on NH-6.
Mahasamund is 50 km from Raipur, 75 km from Durg, 90 km from Dhamtari, 65 km from Bhilai, 30 km from Rajim, 100 km from Saraipali, 130 km from Bilaspur, 200 km from Bargarh, and 250 km from Sambalpur.
There is regular bus service from Guru Ghasi Das bus terminal to these places. Some of the rail way stations in Mahasamund are Khariar Road, Bagbahra, Bhimkhoj, Belsonda, Komakhan, Mahasamund and Arand which connects most of the towns and villages in the District. The major airport is Swami Vivekananda Airport in Raipur which is 38 kilometres from Mahasamund.
